Video Response
The video we watched was very emotional for me in the way that is devastating. It is one thing to see pictures and analyze what is happening in them but to see the people moving in a video and know and see what they are going through is another. I used to think that the Holocaust was a long time ago and that it wouldn't be affecting us today but I was wrong. It was a very short time ago to the point that my grandparents could be affected by it. The video showed how the poor survived in those times and how society looked like then. The rich were living quite well while they walked down the streets in their fur coats and nice hats passing by people who were starving to death on the streets. You would see people passed out on the streets because they had no where else to go. You would even see dead bodies on the streets. The people did not even know why they were filming they just acted normal. The poor became so weak that they could not go downstairs to take out the trash so instead they just tossed it out the window and a giant pile of trash built up and other people would go through that to try to find anything to eat. The poor would walk around without shoes and had sores on their feet. They had no water to clean their clothes, or their bodies. They were so hungry they were not even concerned what they looked like or how they were dressed. The camera man that was being interviewed was not told what to film, he just filmed anything and he was not told why he was filming either. People who survived the Holocaust watched these films and even recognized some of the areas and the people that was filmed. People that were starving slowly to death were filmed with their deformed bodies and dirty faces. People walking on the streets would not even glance in their direction and walked right past them. It was very sad seeing all of this and how people could just let all of this go. People living in such filthy conditions with nothing they can do but try to survive. You also saw the insides of peoples homes with their family crammed together all grouped in a doorway. The video makes me glad that I am living in the United States and do not have to suffer those living conditions. People that survived this are very strong and I respect them greatly. They were able to get through the worst conditions that to us are unimaginable and now they are thriving but still have to live on with the memory of the horrible torture they were put through and what others were put through. They have lost very close friends and family members but have gotten through and live happier and have learned that nothing is impossible.

Joseph Morton testimony
Joseph Morton was born in Lodz Poland. His family
all lived in the same room but it was decent size with several beds, some were
shared. When he heard about the Hitler’s rise to power it started with hearing
from his parents of the harm that was done to the Jew’s. He also had an aunt
that had a sister who lived in Berlin who were kicked out of Germany and were
forced to come back to Lodz Poland. She wanted to go back and she did but she
was sent back to Poland. They were able to live in their same apartment. There wasn’t
any specified jobs in the ghettos. He heard that they were taking children from
the hospital and throwing them out of the windows and into a truck. He was separated
from his mother and some cousins. A US soldier liberated him but he was so sick
he could hardly register it. Some consequences he would suffer would be that he
would have to live on without his mother and he would never want to go back to
his hometown. He later moved to Canada with his brother. Later they moved to
the United States and met up with his father there. When they moved to Canada
the Jewish federation fed them and helped to support them while they were there
and tried to get used to it. They also taught him to be a cutter in the sewing
industry where now he cuts hair. They only stayed in Canada for about a year
and continued to live in Chicago with his father. His cousin went back to
Poland to live.
“They would go as far as the Jewish area and stopped
right there. If they went any further in they would get punished.”
“Being in the ghetto the starvation was very
tremendous.”

Brigitte Altman testimony
Brigitte Altman is from Memel, now known
as Klypida. Her parents were quite wealthy. They lived in a house with two
stories and two living rooms. Brigitte went to school and she was an only
child. Her family was very observant of the Jewish holidays. One of the first
things she noticed when the Germans began taking over is that the friends that
she used to have stopped talking to her completely and the teachers at school
began treating her very rudely. They knew they could not stay where they were
at so they moved with her grandparents. They moved again to a small village
where they were then caught and forced into the ghettos. They survived for the
most part with her having a job growing mostly vegetables out of season and her
father having a job working on machines. Her mother was very ill and could hardly
walk so stayed home. She did pass away leaving only herself and her father. Her
father knew someone outside of the ghetto and found out that they made trips every
so often to the ghetto for deliveries. He devised a plan to get her out and it
took a couple of months. The way she got out was by staying with this certain
group of only about fifteen people and going outside of the ghetto which they
did occasionally to call a friend or to do some other errands. Then the driver
of this truck bribed the guard to look away long enough for her to take off her
star which was only pinned to her clothing so she could then get into the truck
and leave. A consequence to surviving would be that she has to live on without
her mother and also that most of the people that she used to know are no longer
around so she is alone in that aspect.
“Neighbors
would even announce if they suspected neighbors were hiding something.”
“Everyone
in the ghetto was to come to the democracy square which was only a five minute
walk… my mother was still immobile.”

my birthday is in 10 days! i dont have to work tonight so ill probably watch a movie. its suposed to be nice today so ill try to run after school. i loved the waffles my sister-in-law made, she put chocolate chips in it. i hated the syrup though. its wasnt normal syrup it had butter pecan in it. gross! im excited to go to texas! i thought it was going to be just my mom and her boyfriend dropping me off but i guess that we are going to pick up my brother and his wife Blair. i want to do my toes again but i dont know what color. ill probably do them to match whatever color i end up painting my fingernails tonight. probably my black pearl looking color. i hope im not late for my flight. i want my mom to come in with me and help me with me baggage stuff and finding my flight because i have no idea how this is suposed to go down. neither does she but at least ill have someone there with me. my brother does and so does blair. shes in the military and he has picked her up from the airport before so they will probably tell me what to do.instead of writing some other chick is on facebook. i find that funny considering shes always late for class. mind you i dont know what her grade is but she seems like shes the kind of person who doesnt get her stuff together. but besides that im in a good mood. things are starting to turn my way again. i stayed up pretty late finishing this desriptive essay. my problem is i can write a good story but 3-6 pages was not long enough so i ended up cutting it short so the last part doesnt sound too good.
